Posted by: Dave De la Garza TITLE: BALLOON: Please ID this Schwinn Ballooner:
I picked this up from a friend today. I am going to clean it up and am somewhat confused regarding the Ser. No. It may be a 1952, 53 or 57. Ser no is: B20687. I have a 1952 Hornet (Mens~) and I saw no decals on the CG so, can this bike be a Hornet or Panther? or something else?

No...I did not reach any conclusions other than what you wrote...I have to agree it~s a ladies~ model (probably a Meteor or somethin gsimilar) that had a couple options added to it like the springer and the brake caliper. I am going to clean up the bike tomorrow and while the springer stays on, the brake caliper and handle are going.
Many thanks for your leads...especailly the URL to the catalogs.

I sure didn~t recognize it. The catalog shows a front caliper brake as an option, and the lever looks period as far as the photo goes. Did you reach any conclusions from the catalog listings?

Not sure about what it has on the front fork...I know it~s a Schwinn springer and the fenders are painted. It looks like an aftermarket front rubber brake pads on the front rim along with a rusty chrome brake lever on the right side of the handlebars. Does this help?

Nice. I looked at Tom Findley~s catalogs
http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1951_1959/index.html
and couldn~t find a perfect match, nor rule out any of the three years. Possibly an "equipped standard" with a springer option? Panther and Hornet have the longer chainguard, and Panther has chrome fenders.
What~s yours got on the front fork?
