I wrote the software for these Discussion Areas over 10 years ago.
At the time I thought that having a place where you don’t need to register or login, but could just post a question or post an answer, was the way to go. But when it comes to posting pictures and maintaining continuity in a conversation I see this model lacking.
Here at OldRoads our stats are at the highest they’ve ever been. So maybe this is the time to buy some forum software and have forum contributors have their own logins. On other forums I visit, I like to be able to search for replies to my posts and to upload photos easily.
What are your thoughts or recommendations?

Thank you for your feedback here and via email.
We~ve purchased more server space and software for a new forum and are in the process of setting it up.
The rest of our site will not be changed – we’re just upgrading the Discussion Areas.
The hard part will be trying to put the 200,000+ messages from the old forum into the new forum, if that is even possible.
There will be a "Guest" mode which works as this forum does today – you can be totally anonymous – you can post messages, etc without logging in.
But you can also register and use your own account, easily find old conversations, maintain a profile, etc.
And there will be full picture hosting. No need to have an account on photobucket or snapfish or anywhere else.

A few thoughts: 1) I have no problem with the existing format and I think it~s something to be proud of, but if you have reason to change it you~re the boss. 2) It would be nice to be able to include a photo in a post. A few times I~ve noticed that someone was able to insert a picture into the text of their post somehow, but I never figured out how. 3) I~ve been wishing for a database of balloon/middleweight manufacturers, with a way to crossreference dealers and makers - e.g. Chicago Cycle Supply badge, some built by Schwinn and some by Murray, etc. so when somebody has a bike they know about they can post it, to simplify identification, years of manufacture etc. Each bike would be a separate data point. 4) Oldroads is a great site. Thanks again, Vin.
