Posted by: eric TITLE: AGE / VALUE: ebay elgin killers
Is it just me, or does it seem that a lot of nice elgin bikes are being carved up on ebay over the last few weeks. I~m all for making money, but if a bike is all original it shuld stay that way. It~s kind of like killing a rino for its horn. Who are these people?

So I went back to ebay. No one wanted the frame or fenders, so I bought them. Can~t save the world, but at least one old bike.

I can tell you people what to do with your elitist attitude
but I~d get banned. I think all old bikes have merit if for
no other reason but history. Elgins were made by several manufactuers including Murray. Their nice. I realize some bikes were better made than others but just because it can~t fetch big bucks is no reason to destroy a bike. We~ll see the day soon enough when American made iron is gone save for museum pieces or mega buck private collector versions.

How about a quick history on Elgin.
If I have it right, they were sold in Sears catalogs and then somehow became JC Higgins? Is that correct?

Elgins are the bottom of the food chain? I~ll trade Schwinns all day for an original Elgin Bluebird or Robin!
I hate to see any survior~s life end but what can you do. I have a few Elgins in my stable and think that they are great bikes.

Over the years I~ve developed a high respect for Gary.I think the last bike I parted out for the frame was an Elgin.Built a kuston out of that frame. But to save myself I used the other parts to compleat a 1924 elgin motobike.---sam

why one earth would anyone want to keep one together?
elgins are about the lowest desired bike i have ever seen, and i have had some of them. millstones, white elephants. if anyone finds a way to profit from an elgin, so be it.
heres what ya can do.. next time you see an elgin, pay a lot of money for it, and have everyone else do the same.
THEN there will be a place for them. until then, troll the swap meets and see what a complete elgin is really worth. i bet you take them apart as well.
