Posted by: Pete TITLE: MISC: Interchangeable parts!
The "Velvet DeLuxe" has proven to have led a hard life.
Broken stem and broken steerer tube.
Broken crankarm with left pedal brazed on.
(The one that needs off to pull crank!)
Makes the single tube tire deal seem simple; just add $$$.
But how to make rideable?
I drug home a 70~s Huffy or Murray, cheapo ten speed bike.
Looking at the cranks I~m wondering if they might actually fit.
Turns out that 40 years apart and the cranks have same threading! Bearings almost identical, the bottom bracket cups are close, old ones being deeper into bike frame. The lug that engages sprocket is a little off but close enough I can grind on the crank and make it fit.
No way I~m grinding on that old sprocket. Every thing came apart with a liberal dose of Kroil penetrating oil.
Seems do-able.
Working on a temp fork while I find someone trustworthy to repair original.
Going to try and find all the right parts for this but want to see it on the road sooner than later.

I have her assembled, crank turns nicely with just oil for lube. I like that I got to use original sprocket being that it~s most prominent when you look at that side.
Used entire bottom bracket and crank assembly from Huffy, or whatever donor bike was.
(went to work to check metal dumpster but it was gone)
Cups don~t press in as tightly as originals but nothing a little Loctite wouldn~t cure. Pedal screwed right on.
