Posted by: paul TITLE: BALLOON: schwinn? serial number
hi, i~ve just recently picked up what i thought was a schwinn balloon bike. it has a schwinn chigago headbadge but the serrial number is not on the left dropout. there is a number on the head tube and it is FR557231. does anyone know if this is a schwinn or what it is and how old?
thanks

In July 1980, my family reunion took place in Chicago and I clearly remember staying with relatives residing directly down the street on East Kilgore; by the way, Schwinn shut down in ~82 or ~83.

thanks for the reply, i thought it was a schwinn. the chainguard is intact. i~m assuming that it was a coaster brake bike because it has a small plate welded on what i guessed was the fender mount. this is where the brakes are currently mounted. was schwinn still making bikes in chicago in 1980?

thanks

You do indeed have a genuine Schwinn and it was made just 25 years ago in time for the summer of June 1980; it could be a Cruiser model if it has a coaster brake, or front & rear brakes w/levers along w/5-speed gears. Was the chainguard intact?
