I just picked up a Colson bike from the 40s, I think. The number stamped under the crank is 7F 1284. Does the number pin down the year? Should the fork be very similiar to a Shwinn? Should the front hub be stamped "made in germany"?
Thanks, Geo.

Just looked for the number on a pre-war frame, 7F354. Don~t know if that helps. As to the fenders, both peaked and found. They made a lot of bikes for differant Brands. I have a Roadking that are round and a Truesport that are peaked. All the bikes that I have are with dropcenter rims. Brake shuld be New Departure, Morrow, or Muusselman. Colson did make a front hub, so a German hub must have been a replacement. Goodluck. eric

That nailed down the age!!!!. It has the holes in the front axle, not the slots. Now, does anyone have an answer on those fenders? thanks, Geo.

Pre-war Colson forks have a hole for the front axel. It does not slide up like on most forks. You have to pop it in, very hard on the axel threads. Also the hole for the fender screw,or nut and bolt, is offset to the front. It does not have a treaded hole in the center. From a distance they look the same. I don~t know if other bikes had this type of fork, just going by what I have in my garage.

Confused on that one? Every picture of a 40 or 41 Colson that I see shows a forged one piece fork almost identical to the Schwinn one piece forks?. Four pictures in the "Evolution of the Bicycle" book and another on e-bay?. Do you know if the old Colsons had peaked fenders and drop center rims? Thanks, George

After WWII, Colson did not make bikes untill 1949. Pre- war forks not like Schwinn at all. Maybe 49-51?
