Posted by: Dan TITLE: BALLOON: Standard balloon tire bicycle! Standard is the brand?
This ~40~s-~50~s balloon tired bicycle was in a collection I purchased, a ladies in original paint and in decent shape, only missing original front fender light & seat. Who built these bike~s? are they rebadged house brand bikes or were they a company on their own? I can find very little about the Standard although I once had a ~70~s bike boom far east built Standard 10spd. but this balloon standard is American made as far as I can tell.

I now believe the Standard brand bicycle I have was made by Rollfast, similar sprocket, chainguard, on down to the identical painted spears, most likely from the 1940~s.

Thank~s for your imput, the Standard Oil Company wasn~t even a thought but doesn~t seem unlikely that it could have been sold thru Standard station~s. It does have rear facing dropouts, I will try to add a picture in the next couple of days.

I~ve seen Standard badged bikes, but can~t recall too many details, they were prewar bikes though. Do you have any pics? You may have to compare some of the features to determine who built yours. It~s quite posible that it~s a DP Harris built bike, but there were many sub brands of all of the manufacturers. Could be Cleveland Welding, Colson, Dayton/Huffman, or Columbia as well.
What comes to mind when you mention the Standard brand name is the famous Standard Oil of Ohio, I~ve seen many items with their branding, including appliances, so it wouldn~t surprise me if they sold bikes as well. But of course that~s just a wild guess.

This bike has a skiptooth with dogleg crank, the sprocket looks like one i saw on a Rollfast model. I~ll keep for it~s one of a kindism.
