Posted by: Daniel TITLE: AGE / VALUE: Firestone Bicycle (do I own a ghost bike?)
Boy do I need help! At the moment NO ONE can help me identify the particular Firestone bicycle I own. I own a Firestone 500. Not the 500 II from the 1960~s. This one pre-dates that model. It appears to be the "sea mist green" color. The Firestone plate is not like ANY I~ve seen on other Firestone~s. It is of the classic Red "F" on chrome plate with Firestone in red underneath.

It came from an elderly gentleman who says he~s fairly sure he bought it in the 1940~s for his wife. Here~s the thing, the tank runs the full length of the bar with white(dart) style graphics on both sides of the tank seem to support his story placing it in at least the 40~s or 50~s.

All other 500~s I~ve seen have a small tank, with indy flags, and the chain guard has indy flags. My model~s tank is large with no flags (different graphic) and indy flags on the chain guard (which the chain guard doesn~t match any I~ve seen either)

I know these Firestone~s were made by Huffy, Murray, HP Snyder, Clevelend Welding, Werner Auto, ect, but this bike bears NO name from those makers.

Many collectors and restorers I~ve talked to aren~t familiar with the 500 model predating the 1960~s. Also there~s a label that says (Arco Div. American-Marietta) The serial number starts with an (A) which is something I haven~t seen on ANY Firestones.

Any suggestions???? The tires say Gillette Ambassodor 26x1.75 and appear to be the second set of tires for the bike.

Oops! That should say "Firestones were made by Monark".

Most of the 40~s and early 50~s Monark that I have seen were built by Monark. Try looking at photos of Monarks from that period and see if they look similar. They generally used the same chain ring on their bikes regardless of what company they were badged for.
