HI ,
Can anyone tell me what what a lead or aluminum tag on the post above the crank that says ( 1967 ,Danville, Badge 133 ) means??Cannot seem to locate the serial number .Maybe under the paint?
The Schwinn is spray bombed black frame with chrome fenders and chain guard .( Also painted black ).Has the black and white Schwinn seat and white Schwinn handlebar grips.

Stamped into the steel. You~d need to use a grinder to remove it.

Thank You very much, Brian. The Licence explanation /information was really interesting.
One more question, I am scraping off approximately four layers of paint on this bike frame. Is the SN# always stamped into the metal frame for Schwinn Bicycles or is it simply stamped in the original paint . I don~t want to scrape it off . Thank You ,This is a fantistic discussion group

Many cities and towns registered bicycles as a way of collecting tax and also to identify ownership of case of theft. There were many types of plates from stick on to small and large size tin, like miniature auto tags. Some elaborate ones like you have were made of aluminum that wrapped aroun the seatpost or headtube. They were round, square, star, shield shaped and many more. Some tags had built in reflectors and some during WWll were made out of a paper composit material to conserve steel.

Thank you for the SN# location information . I~ll definitely check it out.
Would the licence plate be something that a city would require of the owner ? I~ve never seen a soft metal, wrapped tag like this. And only remember the scaled down vehicle type licence plate.

That sounds like a licence plate.
The serial number will be on the head tube or on the left rear dropout.
