Posted by: Justin TITLE: BALLOON: How to determine tire size/type?
Hi,
I~m a bicycle nut and newbie vintage bicycle nut and I~m trying to get all of the vocab down. Can someone tell me how to tell Balloon vs regular tires? I know it~s the size, but I~ve got an old rusty bike I picked up this weekend that has no tires. How can I tell from the frames the type/size tires I~d need for it? It~s a Murray and says Galaxy Flyer (can~t find much info on the web) on the chain guard. Thanks for any help.

There is a Tire and Rim chart on this site under the General Resources section.
Basically, balloon tires have a width of 2.125 and middleweight tire have a width of 1.75 or 1 3/4.

Sorry to reply to my own post but I was able to barely see the wording on the decal on this bike. It says Flying O Otasco so it must be a Murray built for Otasco. Still don~t know what model though. The chain guard says Galaxy Flyer. The serial # was pretty rusty but I think it is N075010-068168991. Any info on the bike and/or my tire question I~d appreciate it.
