Posted by: Jason TITLE: MISC: Restore two Panthers
I just picked up two early 50~s Panthers, a men~s and women~s bikes. I~m going to strip them and refinish them (they~ve already been stripped and repainted by a prior owner) and replace parts as needed. How can I learn things like whether the tanks/chainguards on early 50~s Panthers were fully or partially chromed, or the original handlebar size? I~m tempted to buy new chrome fenders, have the tanks and chainguards fully chromed and just paint the frames two-tone (custom colors). Not exactly a faithful restore. But it~d be cool looking. Thoughts?

Oh, and another thing--the head badges. Prior owner put some tin reproduction badges on the headtube that clearly did not fit the factory-drilled screw-holes. Any ideas on what original Panther head badges looked like. I~ve gone half blind trying to examine photos in a couple Schwinn books I have--never a good, clean head-on shot of a head badge.
