At what point did J.C. Higgins stop using skip toothed cranks? I have an old J.C. and would like to find out the production date. I have the model and serial numbers but don~t know what to look for.

I have a JC Higgins bicycle that probably made pre-1960~s. I would like to determine its manufacture date. The numbers stamped on the crack are: MOST, MOD50245500, 179656. These numbers are one above the other. Any idea~s?

If it is a JC Higgins, you know it was made after they started making bikes again after World War II. Sears bikes before the war were Elgin. About the only way to get a good handle on the year of manufacture is to get a copy of the Elgin Hawthorne Collectible bike book and match your bike to one of the catalog reprints.
