The Torpedo Automatic hub would be an aftermarket add-on to that bike as it was not manufactured until the 1960~s. It is a great hub for a cruiser. I have two of them on bikes I have built up and love them. If you do decide to swap out the hub, you may be able to sell it for $50-100. They have a small but loyal fan base! Thanks for the help. The hub shifts when you start out pedaling,AS you pick up speed the hub shifts to the 2nd. gear and as you slow down it gets easier to pedal.I was told that the bike is a 1953 or 1954 because it has no holes for the badge, but there is no badge on it at all.I will try to get some pictures a.s.a.p.

The bike would have some value for the springer alone. Since you called the bike an Evans-Colson, I would estimate the date between 1953 and 1957. 1953 was the last year for Colson bikes to be made in Elyria, Ohio. The flood of imports at that time from Europe and the UK caused the bicycle division of Colson to be sold to Evans in Plymouth Michigan. The bikes were sold for a few years under the "Evans-Colson" label, then became known simply as "Evans". In the middle 1990~s, the Colson Equipment Company was in Caruthersville, Missouri and still producing wheeled goods such as wheelchairs and stretchers. I don~t know their status as of now. If you can post a photo, it would be easier to identify.

I~ll guess you have a Sachs two-speed Torpedo hub. It~s not the bike~s name - actually the Torpedo name appeared on both Sachs and Bendix hubs that shared the same design. Presumably it~s a kickback, since it says automatic, and 2gang (ahem- zweigang) is German for two-speed. Please let me know if it is or not.
I inquired on this site back in ~01 about the relationship between the two makers, and still don~t know if it was contract, partnership or what. Today I put bendix+sachs+torpedo in the site archive search box and it came up #1.
