I am on the hunt for any decals or information about a Firestone 500 that my husband gave me recently. Looking online I have found some similar, but not exactly like mine. I am a vintage bike lover and part-time collector. i do not know alot about my bike, but I see similar bikes came in a range of color options. Which brings me to my dilemma: to paint or not to paint? that is my question. I know not the value of my bike , but I am a great painter and since it is rusty I would really love making it bright and shiny and RED. Right now it is dark bluish GREEN. My husband sez, "Bad Idea", but he is loathe to ever retouch/restore/ redecorate any of his bike. If there is anyone out there with an idea of where i could get the decals, then maybe I can restore its original beauty.
Also, if you think you might know the exact year...
Besides the Firestone 500 on the chain guard, there are a pair of checkers flags. The decals are all white in color, except for the name plate has some othere color. It has a gas tank with twin battery powered headlights mounted in it.

I think you need to give yourself permission to be a hotrodder rather than a restorer. For one thing, as they say, it~s only original once. The costs of making it look original will certainly exceed the resulting value- so a person who would just as soon have a red one may as well have a red hot rod Firestone. Typically in that era it was red for boys, blue for girls.
You~ll need to take good photos of your decals, or find pictures of one like yours. Then you can get transfers made if you want to. There~s a list of people who do that kind of work on sheldon brown- http://sheldonbrown.com/bicycling-links.html
but I suggest you customize and ride with pride.
I~d like to see a picture.
